Work Permit in Malaysia
Malaysia allows international students to work part-time during their studies and offers Employment Pass options for graduates who wish to remain and work in Malaysia after completing their degree.
Part-Time Work During Studies
Malaysian Student Pass holders are permitted to work part-time (up to 20 hours per week) during semester breaks and university holidays in approved sectors: restaurants, petrol stations, mini-markets, and convenience stores. On-campus employment as research assistants, tutors, or in campus facilities is also available. A formal work permit is not required for on-campus or approved part-time work — your Student Pass covers it.
Graduate Employment Pass
After completing a degree at a Malaysian institution, graduates can apply for a Graduate Entrepreneur Programme (GEP) or an Employment Pass (EP) to work in Malaysia. The Employment Pass is employer-sponsored — your Malaysian employer applies on your behalf. EP holders can work full-time and are eligible for dependent passes for family members.
Employment Pass Categories
Employment Pass Category I: Monthly salary MYR 10,000+, valid 1–5 years, renewable. Employment Pass Category II: Monthly salary MYR 5,000–9,999, valid 2 years, renewable. Employment Pass Category III: Monthly salary MYR 3,000–4,999, valid 1 year, renewable. All categories allow dependants.
Professional Visit Pass
Short-term work assignment in Malaysia (up to 12 months for approved activities). Sponsored by a Malaysian company. Used by professionals, researchers, and interns on corporate placements.

Malaysia's strongest hiring sectors for international graduates include: Information Technology and software development (Cyberjaya, KL Sentral), Oil & Gas and petroleum engineering (Petronas, Shell), Islamic Finance and banking (Kuala Lumpur financial centre), Electronics and semiconductor manufacturing (Penang), and Hospitality and tourism management (nationwide).
