Malaysia is one of the most welcoming and affordable study destinations for Indian students — with English-medium degrees, a large Indian community, affordable living costs, and a clear Student Pass process managed by the Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS).

Student Pass (Visa)

Indian students need a Malaysian Student Pass to study in Malaysia. The Student Pass is applied for through the Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS) online portal — managed by your university on your behalf. The process typically takes 4–8 weeks. You will receive a Single Entry Visa (SEV) from the Malaysian High Commission in India to travel, and your Student Pass (iKad) is collected on arrival in Malaysia.

English Language Requirements

Many Malaysian universities accept students whose Class XII was taught in English, waiving IELTS entirely. Where IELTS is required, typical thresholds are 5.5–6.0 for undergraduate and 6.0–6.5 for postgraduate programmes. TOEFL and PTE are also accepted at most institutions.

Accommodation

Most Malaysian universities provide on-campus hostel accommodation at very affordable rates (MYR 200–600/month). Private apartments near campuses are also available at MYR 500–1,200/month for a shared room. Kuala Lumpur, Subang Jaya, Petaling Jaya, and Cyberjaya are popular student areas.

Healthcare

Malaysia has an excellent and affordable healthcare system. International students are required to purchase health insurance — most universities include basic health coverage in their student fees or offer it at low cost. Government hospitals provide subsidised treatment, and private hospitals are internationally accredited.

Part-Time Work

Malaysian Student Pass holders are allowed to work part-time (up to 20 hours per week) in approved sectors during semester breaks, at campus cafeterias, petrol stations, mini-markets, and convenience stores. On-campus employment (research assistants, tutors) is also available at many universities.
