Admission Requirements

Admission requirements for Irish universities are straightforward for well-prepared Indian students. The key requirements are strong academic credentials, appropriate English language test scores, a compelling Statement of Purpose (SOP), and good references. Here is what you need to know.

English Language Requirements

Most Irish universities require IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall (with no band below 6.0 for most programmes; 6.5 minimum for business, law, and clinical programmes). TOEFL iBT 79–95 is accepted at most universities. PTE Academic 55–65 is also widely accepted. Some universities accept students from recognised English-medium schools (CBSE / ICSE in English) with a medium of instruction letter in lieu of IELTS for undergraduate programmes. Trinity College Dublin generally requires IELTS 6.5 for most programmes; UCD and UCC typically accept IELTS 6.0–6.5 depending on the programme.

Undergraduate Admission (Bachelor's Degrees)

For Irish bachelor's degree programmes (Level 8), Indian students with a strong Class XII result (65%+ in relevant subjects for science and engineering; 60%+ for arts and business) are generally competitive. Mathematics is required for engineering, science, and economics programmes. Biology and Chemistry are required for medicine and pharmaceutical sciences. Some competitive programmes — medicine, dentistry, law at TCD — may require significantly higher scores and additional tests (HPAT Ireland for medicine).

Postgraduate Admission (Master's Degrees)

For Irish master's programmes (Level 9), the standard requirement is a relevant bachelor's degree (Level 8 equivalent) with a minimum 55–60% aggregate (or CGPA 2.5+ on a 4.0 scale; 6.5+ on a 10.0 scale for Indian universities). Specific prerequisite subjects are required depending on the programme. Computer science master's programmes typically require a relevant undergraduate degree in CS, IT, or engineering. Business master's programmes may require quantitative subjects, GMAT, or relevant work experience. PhD programmes require a first-class master's degree and a well-developed research proposal.

Statement of Purpose (SOP)
