Blocked Account (Sperrkonto) — EUR 11,904 Mandatory
A Blocked Account (Sperrkonto) is a special German bank account that holds a minimum of EUR 11,904 (equivalent to EUR 992/month x 12 months — the 2024 requirement) to demonstrate you have sufficient funds to support yourself for one year in Germany. The Blocked Account is opened with a German bank or fintech provider — most commonly Fintiba (fintiba.com), Coracle (coracle.de), or Deutsche Bank. The EUR 11,904 is held in the account and released to you in monthly instalments of EUR 992 once you arrive in Germany and activate your account. You can use this EUR 992/month for living expenses. German Health Insurance for Students
Health insurance (Krankenversicherung) is mandatory for all students enrolled at German universities. For students under 30 years of age studying at a German university, statutory public health insurance (gesetzliche Krankenversicherung) is available at a reduced student rate of approximately EUR 120/month through providers including Techniker Krankenkasse (TK), DAK-Gesundheit, AOK, and Barmer. Anmeldung — City Registration on Arrival
Within 14 days of arriving in Germany, all residents must register their address at the local residents' registration office (Einwohnermeldeamt or Burgeramt). You receive a Meldebescheinigung (registration certificate) confirming your German address. This registration is required for: opening a German bank account (Konto), obtaining your German tax identification number (Steueridentifikationsnummer), enrolling in health insurance, applying for your Aufenthaltstitel (residence permit), and accessing virtually all German government services. Aufenthaltstitel — Study Residence Permit
After arriving in Germany on your National Visa (Type D), you must apply for your Aufenthaltstitel (residence permit for the purpose of study) at the local Auslanderbehorde (Foreigners' Registration Office — also called KVR in Munich or LEA in Frankfurt). This typically requires: your passport, Meldebescheinigung (address registration), university enrolment confirmation, Blocked Account activation, health insurance confirmation, and biometric photos.
