Germany offers significant scholarship opportunities for Indian students — led by the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service), the world's largest scholarship organisation. Combined with the Deutschlandstipendium and university-specific excellence awards, substantial funding is available for well-qualified Indian students. DAAD Scholarship — Full Funding + EUR 850-1,200/Month Stipend
DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst) is the world's largest scholarship organisation for international academic exchange, with an annual budget exceeding EUR 600 million. DAAD offers multiple scholarship programmes specifically for Indian students including: DAAD Research Grants for master's and doctoral research in Germany (covering living costs of EUR 934/month for master's scholars + travel allowance + study and research allowance); DAAD Helmut Schmidt Programme for public policy master's programmes; DAAD WISE Programme for undergraduate research internships at German universities; and DAAD Development-Related Postgraduate Courses for students from developing countries studying in Germany. DAAD scholarship applications are highly competitive and require outstanding academic results (typically 70%+ or equivalent), a strong research proposal or motivation letter, and letters of reference from academic supervisors. Deutschlandstipendium — EUR 300/Month from German Universities
The Deutschlandstipendium (Germany Scholarship) is a joint initiative of the German Federal Government and private sector sponsors. Enrolled students at participating German universities can receive EUR 300/month (EUR 150 from the federal government + EUR 150 from a private corporate sponsor) for a minimum of 2 semesters. The scholarship is awarded on the basis of academic achievement and social engagement. Applications are made through individual German universities — timing varies by university. Corporate sponsors include BMW, Siemens, SAP, Bosch, and Deutsche Bank. Prosper Overseas advises students on Deutschlandstipendium eligibility and application timing at specific German universities.
Baden-Wurttemberg Stipendium
The Baden-Wurttemberg Stipendium is a one-semester exchange scholarship for students enrolled at universities in the German state of Baden-Wurttemberg (which includes KIT Karlsruhe, University of Heidelberg, University of Stuttgart, University of Tubingen, and University of Freiburg). It provides funding of EUR 1,570 for a one-semester research or study exchange at an international partner university. While primarily for outgoing students from Baden-Wurttemberg universities, it is relevant for Indian students enrolled at these universities who wish to undertake an exchange semester at a European partner institution.
Erasmus+ Scholarships
Germany is a major Erasmus+ participant. Indian students enrolled at German universities cannot receive Erasmus+ funding for study at non-EU institutions (Erasmus+ is restricted to EU partner programmes). However, students can apply for Erasmus+ mobility grants to study at partner universities elsewhere in Europe or undertake work placements at European companies. Erasmus+ grants of EUR 250-700/month are available for outward mobility periods of 2-12 months from German universities to EU partner institutions. This is particularly valuable for German university students who wish to gain experience in another European country during their degree.
University Excellence Scholarships
TUM: TUM Merit Award and TUM Graduate School fellowships for outstanding international master's and doctoral students. LMU Munich: LMU Excellence Scholarship for top international master's applicants (competitive; requires exceptional academic record). KIT: KIT Sonderstipendien for outstanding international students in specific faculties. Heidelberg University: Heidelberg Excellence Initiative fellowships for doctoral researchers.
