The APS Certificate (Akademische Prufstelle) is a mandatory document authentication and academic evaluation process operated by the German Embassy through the APS India offices in New Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai. ALL Indian students applying to German universities must obtain an APS Certificate before their application can be processed. The APS process involves: (1) submitting certified copies of all academic documents (Class X certificate and mark sheets, Class XII certificate and mark sheets, all semester mark sheets and degree certificate of your bachelor's degree); (2) attending a personal interview at the APS office (typically 20-30 minutes, conducted in English or German) where an APS examiner verifies your documents and asks subject-specific questions about your academic background; (3) receiving your APS Certificate (typically within 6-8 weeks of the interview). English Language Requirements for English-Taught Programmes
German university English-taught master's programmes typically require IELTS Academic 6.5 overall (with no sub-band below 6.0 for most programmes) or TOEFL iBT 88+. Some programmes at TUM, RWTH Aachen, and KIT require IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL 95 for competitive programmes. Cambridge C1 Advanced (CAE) with grade B or above is accepted at most universities. Accepted German language tests include TestDaF (Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache — minimum TestDaF 4 in all four sections for most programmes) and the DSH (Deutsche Sprachprufung fur den Hochschulzugang — DSH 2 or DSH 3 for demanding programmes). Most German universities use the uni-assist portal (uni-assist.de) for processing international applications. uni-assist is a shared application service operated by over 170 German universities.
