UAE Student Residence Visa

The UAE Student Residence Visa (formally a Student Residence Permit) is the primary visa for international students studying in Dubai. Unlike many countries where you apply for a visa before admission, in Dubai your university sponsors your Student Residence Visa after you have accepted your offer and paid your tuition deposit. This university-sponsored visa model makes the Dubai visa process significantly simpler than, for example, the UK Student Visa or Australian Student Visa — there is no points-based assessment, no financial demonstration of living costs to a government authority, and no visa interview at an embassy.

Documents required for UAE Student Residence Visa (provided to your university for visa sponsorship): valid passport (minimum 6 months validity), passport-sized photographs (white background), original offer/acceptance letter from university, medical fitness certificate (blood tests and chest X-ray — done in UAE at a MOHAP-approved centre upon arrival), and Emirates ID application (mandatory for all UAE residents). The visa is typically issued as a 1-year renewable residence visa. The total cost of the UAE student visa sponsorship (visa fees, Emirates ID, medical) is approximately AED 3,000-4,500, which is either paid by the student or included in the university fee package — varies by institution.

On a UAE Student Residence Visa, you can legally work part-time 20 hours per week. You can open a UAE bank account (required for receiving salary). You can drive in the UAE with your UAE Residence Visa (after obtaining UAE driving licence). You can sponsor family members (parents, siblings) for visit visas. You can travel in and out of the UAE freely. The Emirates ID card (biometric national ID for all UAE residents) is mandatory and must be applied for within 30 days of visa issuance. After completing your degree, most Dubai universities assist with transitioning from a student visa to a work/employment visa sponsored by a UAE employer — or you can apply for the UAE Job Seeker Visa to search for employment.
