Study In Denmark

Denmark is consistently ranked the world's happiest country and one of Europe's most rewarding study destinations for international students. Home to some of Scandinavia's finest universities — including the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), University of Copenhagen (UCPH), Aarhus University, and Copenhagen Business School (CBS) — Denmark offers world-class education in a country where innovation, sustainability, and quality of life are national priorities. Denmark is the birthplace of LEGO, Maersk, Vestas, Ørsted, and Novo Nordisk — global leaders in manufacturing, shipping, wind energy, and pharmaceuticals — creating a thriving industry ecosystem that connects university research directly to real-world impact.

International students in Denmark benefit from one of Europe's most favourable student visa frameworks — the Danish Student Residence Permit allows you to work up to 20 hours per week during term time (and full-time during holidays), earning tax-reduced income in one of the world's highest-wage economies. Danish universities offer a wide range of Master's programmes taught entirely in English — over 700 English-language programmes across sciences, engineering, business, IT, and humanities. Tuition fees for non-EU students range from DKK 45,000 to DKK 120,000 per year (approximately INR 4.5–12 lakh), placing Denmark at the affordable end of Scandinavian study destinations.

The Danish Government's Study in Denmark programme actively supports international students — offering the Danish Government Scholarship and Excellence Scholarship to outstanding non-EU/EEA students. DTU and UCPH consistently appear in global QS top-100 rankings. Denmark's research excellence is reflected in its per-capita Nobel Prize count — one of the highest in the world. The country invests approximately 3% of its GDP in research and development — among the highest R&D intensity in Europe. For Indian students interested in engineering, computer science, sustainable energy, pharmaceuticals, or business, Denmark offers a unique combination of academic rigour and hands-on, problem-based learning (pioneered by Aalborg University's world-famous PBL methodology).

Copenhagen — Denmark's capital — is regularly voted Europe's most liveable city. It is famous for its cycling culture (90% of residents cycle daily), clean air, waterways, and Nyhavn harbour. Denmark's healthcare system (free for registered residents), social security framework, and student support services provide a safety net that is rare globally. The post-study work pathway in Denmark is excellent — a Job-Seeking Visa of 6 months (extendable to 12) is available after graduation from a Danish university, giving you ample time to find employment in the Danish and broader Scandinavian job market. Danish companies like Vestas, Ørsted, Novo Nordisk, Carlsberg, and Maersk actively recruit internationally-educated graduates with STEM and business skills.

Why Study in Denmark?

Denmark combines world-class universities, sustainability leadership, and the world's highest quality of life — making it one of Europe's most compelling study destinations for ambitious Indian students.

  • World-Ranked UniversitiesDTU (top 100 QS globally), University of Copenhagen (top 100 QS), Aarhus University (top 150 QS), Copenhagen Business School (top 5 European business schools). Denmark punches far above its weight in global university rankings for a country of just 6 million people.
  • Sustainability & Green Energy LeadershipDenmark is the world leader in wind energy — Vestas and Ørsted are Danish, and Denmark generates over 50% of its electricity from wind. For engineering and environmental science students, Denmark is the world's best laboratory for sustainable energy and green technology research.
  • Work Rights During StudiesDanish Student Residence Permit allows 20 hours/week of paid work during term and full-time during holidays. Denmark's minimum wage is among Europe's highest — student jobs typically pay DKK 120–160/hour (approximately INR 1,500–2,000/hour), tax-reduced.
  • Problem-Based Learning (PBL)Aalborg University pioneered the PBL methodology — the most hands-on engineering education approach in Europe. DTU, AAU, and other Danish universities emphasise project work and real-industry collaboration, giving graduates practical skills employers value immediately.
  • Post-Study Work PathwayAfter graduating from a Danish university, you can apply for a Job-Seeking Residence Permit valid for 6 months (extendable to 12) to search for employment in Denmark and Scandinavia. Denmark's Positive List makes it easier for qualified STEM and business graduates to obtain work permits.
  • English-Language ProgrammesOver 700 Master's programmes in Denmark are taught entirely in English. Most Danish universities have strong English-medium research environments, and Copenhagen in particular is among Europe's most English-friendly cities — virtually every Dane speaks fluent English.

How to Apply for Denmark

Our counsellors guide you through every step — from choosing the right Danish university to arriving in Copenhagen and settling into student life in Scandinavia.

  1. Free Profile Evaluation — Share your academic background, English test scores, and career goals with our Denmark counsellors for a free assessment of your eligibility for Danish universities and English-language programmes.
  2. University & Programme Selection — We match your profile with the best-fit Danish university — DTU, UCPH, Aarhus, CBS, AAU, SDU, or ITU — based on your academic background, career goals, and budget. We identify scholarship opportunities specific to your profile.
  3. Application & Document Preparation — We prepare your complete application — Statement of Purpose (SOP), academic transcripts (attested and translated if needed), English test scores (IELTS/TOEFL), CV, references, and portfolio (for design/architecture programmes).

Denmark Student Residence Permit

The Danish Student Residence Permit (ST1 visa) is your gateway to studying in one of Europe's happiest and most innovative countries.

The Danish Student Residence Permit — processed by the Danish Agency for International Recruitment and Integration (SIRI) — is required for non-EU/EEA students studying in Denmark for more than 3 months. Once you hold an unconditional offer letter from a Danish university, you apply for the ST1 permit online via newtodenmark.dk. Required documents include: valid passport, unconditional offer letter, proof of tuition fee payment (or scholarship letter), proof of financial means (DKK 5,000-6,000 per month, approximately INR 55,000-65,000/month), health insurance (until Danish CPR registration), and passport photographs. Processing typically takes 2-4 weeks for Indian applicants. The permit is initially issued for the duration of your programme and allows 20 hours/week of part-time work during term.

  1. Receive Unconditional Offer Letter — Obtain your unconditional offer letter from your Danish university. Conditional offers do not qualify for the visa application — ensure all conditions (English score, document verification) are met first.
  2. Create SIRI Online Account — Go to newtodenmark.dk and create an account. Select the Student Residence Permit (ST1) application form. Fill in personal details, programme information, and university details.
  3. Gather Required Documents — Compile: valid passport (6+ months validity), passport-sized photographs, unconditional offer letter, proof of English language proficiency, proof of financial means (bank statements showing DKK 5,000-6,000/month), and scholarship/tuition fee payment receipt.
  4. Submit Online Application & Pay Fee — Submit the completed ST1 application online and pay the application fee (DKK 4,175 for study, approximately INR 47,000). Applications are assessed digitally — no embassy visit required for most Indian applicants.
  5. Biometrics at Danish Mission — You may be required to provide biometrics (fingerprints and photograph) at the Danish Embassy or Consulate in India (New Delhi or Mumbai). SIRI will notify you if this is required.
  6. Receive Permit Decision — SIRI typically processes Indian student applications within 2-4 weeks. You will receive an email notification. If approved, you collect your biometric residence permit (card) after arriving in Denmark.
  7. Arrive in Denmark & Register CPR — Within 5 days of arrival, register your address at the local Borgerservice (Citizen Services Centre). You will be issued a CPR number (Danish national ID) — essential for opening a bank account, accessing healthcare, and applying for a tax card.
  8. Obtain Skattekort (Tax Card) — Register with SKAT (Danish Tax Agency) to obtain a tax card (skattekort) — required to legally work part-time and receive reduced-rate tax deductions on your Danish income.
