Subclass 500 Student Visa

The Subclass 500 Student Visa is the primary visa for international students in Australia studying full-time at a CRICOS-registered institution. It grants work rights (48 hours per fortnight during term, unlimited during scheduled breaks), the right to bring accompanying family members (partner and children on secondary visas with similar work rights), access to OSHC (Overseas Student Health Cover) health insurance, and multiple entry rights (you can travel in and out of Australia freely on the Subclass 500). The visa is typically granted for the duration of your course plus an additional 60 days. Applications are submitted online via ImmiAccount (immi.homeaffairs.gov.au). There is no biometrics enrollment required for Indian applicants (unlike UK, Canada, and Schengen). Most straightforward applications are decided without an interview. The application fee is AUD 710 (2024). Processing times vary from days (for very straightforward applications) to 4-8 weeks for typical Indian student applicants.

The Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement is the most critical and most frequently misunderstood aspect of the Subclass 500 application. The GTE assessment requires applicants to demonstrate that they are genuinely seeking to come to Australia temporarily for study purposes — not as a way to migrate. However, this does not mean you cannot have immigration intentions — it means your primary motivation must be the educational benefit of the course, and your study plans must be consistent with your academic background and career goals. Factors assessed: (1) your personal circumstances — economic, social, and cultural ties to India; (2) your immigration history — previous visa refusals or overstays anywhere in the world; (3) your study circumstances — how the course relates to your previous study and future career goals; (4) your circumstances in Australia — accommodation, financial support, and proposed study plans; (5) value of the course — whether the course provides value given your prior qualifications. A thoughtful, detailed, and honest GTE statement that addresses all these factors is essential — generic or vague statements are a common cause of refusals.

Financial evidence for the Subclass 500 visa must demonstrate funds of at least AUD 21,041 per year for living expenses (2024 rate) plus first year tuition fees plus travel costs. Accepted evidence includes: bank statements showing sufficient funds held for at least 3 months (personal or parental); education loan sanction letter from an Indian bank (must show the sanctioned loan amount and the borrower's repayment capacity); scholarship letters (covering tuition and/or living expenses); or a sponsor declaration with supporting income evidence. On arrival in Australia: within your first week, apply for a Tax File Number (TFN) through the ATO website — free, processed in 1-2 weeks. Open an Australian bank account (Commonwealth Bank, ANZ, Westpac, NAB all have dedicated student accounts — many allow account opening from India before arrival). Enrol in OSHC with your chosen provider. Attend university orientation week. Apply for the Student Visa bridging extension (if needed) well before your visa expires. Note: if your circumstances change significantly while in Australia (e.g., you fail multiple subjects or reduce study load), your visa conditions may be affected — maintain satisfactory academic progress throughout your studies.
