Study In Australia

Australia is the world's sixth-largest country and one of the most sought-after study destinations for Indian students globally. With 7 universities ranked in the global QS top 100 — including the University of Melbourne (#33), Australian National University (#30), University of Sydney (#42), UNSW Sydney, University of Queensland, Monash University, and the University of Western Australia — Australia offers world-class education delivered in English, in a safe and multicultural environment that feels remarkably welcoming to the 1 million+ strong Indian diaspora already living and working across the country. Australia's Group of Eight (Go8) universities — Melbourne, ANU, Sydney, UNSW, UQ, Monash, Adelaide, and UWA — are the country's leading research institutions, comparable in standing to the UK's Russell Group and Canada's U15.

Australia's Subclass 500 Student Visa is one of the world's most generous student visa frameworks — allowing full-time work during scheduled breaks and up to 48 hours per fortnight (24 hours/week) during term. This work right enables Indian students to earn Australian income (at Australia's exceptionally high minimum wage of AUD 23.23/hour as of July 2024 — the highest minimum wage in the developed world) while studying. After completing a degree at an Australian university, eligible graduates can apply for the Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485) — an open work visa valid for 2-4 years (Post-Study Work Stream) depending on the course and study location. The 485 visa is fully open — you can work for any employer, in any occupation, anywhere in Australia.

Australia's skilled migration system — administered by the Department of Home Affairs — provides clear pathways to permanent residence for graduates of Australian universities with in-demand skills. The General Skilled Migration (GSM) programme, comprising the Skilled Independent visa (Subclass 189), Skilled Nominated visa (Subclass 190), and Skilled Work Regional visa (Subclass 491), awards points based on age, English proficiency, skills assessment, Australian study, and other factors. Graduate-level qualifications from Australian universities attract up to 5 additional points. Regional study (outside Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane) attracts further additional points. Australia's Critical Skills in Demand list and Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) identify the occupations in highest demand — STEM, healthcare, engineering, accounting, and information technology graduates consistently score highly.

The Indian community in Australia is the fourth-largest ethnic group in the country — approximately 800,000 Indian-Australians, concentrated in Melbourne (Victoria), Sydney (NSW), Perth (WA), and Brisbane (QLD). Indian students in Australia have access to a rich support network — Indian student associations at every major university, Indian restaurants, grocery stores, Hindu temples, Sikh gurdwaras, and cultural events in every major Australian city. Australia's High Commissions of India (in Canberra) and Indian Consulates (in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, and Adelaide) provide full consular services. Flight time from major Indian cities to Australia: Mumbai to Sydney approximately 13 hours; Bengaluru to Melbourne approximately 12 hours. Both Qantas and Air India operate direct routes between India and Australia.

Why Study in Australia?

Australia combines world-class universities, the world's highest minimum wage for part-time work, a generous 485 post-study visa, and a clear skilled migration PR pathway — all in one of the world's most beautiful and liveable countries.

  • World-Class Universities7 Australian universities in the global QS top 100. The Group of Eight (Go8) — Melbourne, ANU, Sydney, UNSW, UQ, Monash, Adelaide, and UWA — are globally recognised research institutions. Australian degrees are highly valued by employers worldwide.
  • Generous Work Rights (48 hrs/fortnight)Subclass 500 allows 48 hours/fortnight (24 hours/week) of paid work during term, plus unlimited hours during scheduled breaks. At Australia's minimum wage of AUD 23.23/hour — the world's highest — working 24 hours/week generates AUD 2,230/month, covering most living costs.
  • 485 Post-Study Work VisaUp to 4 years of open work rights after graduation (2-year base + 1-2 year regional incentive). Work for any employer, in any occupation, anywhere in Australia. This valuable work experience directly builds your skilled migration points score.
  • Clear Skilled Migration PR PathwayAustralia's points-based skilled migration system (Subclass 189, 190, 491) specifically rewards Australian graduates. Additional points for Australian study, age, English proficiency, and regional study create achievable PR pathways for most STEM and business graduates.
  • World's Highest Quality of LifeMelbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Perth are consistently ranked in the world's top 10 most liveable cities. Australia has superb climate, safety, healthcare, infrastructure, and natural beauty — beaches, rainforests, outback, and the Great Barrier Reef.
  • Strong Indian Community800,000+ Indian-Australians. India is the second-largest source country for international students in Australia. Indian food, culture, temples, and community networks are present in every major Australian city — reducing cultural adjustment for Indian students significantly.

Subclass 500 Student Visa

The Australian Subclass 500 Student Visa is your gateway to world-class education, 48 hrs/fortnight work rights, and a clear pathway to the 485 post-study work visa and permanent residence.

The Subclass 500 Student Visa is issued by the Australian Department of Home Affairs and is required for international students studying in Australia for more than 3 months. It allows full-time study at a CRICOS-registered institution, work rights of 48 hours per fortnight during term time and unlimited hours during scheduled breaks, and the right to bring immediate family members (partner and children) to Australia on secondary visas (with similar work rights). Applications are submitted online via the ImmiAccount portal. The GTE (Genuine Temporary Entrant) statement is the most important part of the application — it must convincingly demonstrate your genuine intention to study and then return to your home country (or migrate through legitimate pathways). Required documents include: Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE), Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the visa period, financial evidence (typically AUD 21,041 per year for living expenses + tuition + travel), English test scores, and academic transcripts. Most Indian applicants receive decisions within 4-6 weeks.

  1. Receive Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) — After accepting your offer and paying the tuition deposit, your Australian university issues a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) — the essential document for your Subclass 500 visa application. Your CoE contains your CRICOS provider number.
  2. Purchase Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) — All Subclass 500 holders must maintain OSHC throughout their stay. Purchase OSHC from an approved provider (Medibank, Allianz, BUPA, NIB, or AHM) — typically AUD 600-800 per year for a single student.
  3. Create ImmiAccount & Apply Online — Create an ImmiAccount at immi.homeaffairs.gov.au. Complete the Subclass 500 application online. Upload all documents electronically — no physical documents sent to an Australian High Commission.
  4. Prepare GTE Statement — The Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) statement is critical. We guide you through writing a compelling GTE that explains your study motivation, ties to India, and future plans. A weak GTE is the most common reason for student visa refusals.
  5. Provide Financial Evidence — Demonstrate funds of approximately AUD 21,041 per year for living expenses, plus first year tuition fees, plus travel costs. Bank statements (typically 3-6 months), scholarship letters, education loan sanction letters, or sponsor income evidence are all accepted.
  6. Pay Visa Application Fee — Pay the Subclass 500 application fee (AUD 710 as of 2024). No biometrics enrollment required for Indian applicants (unlike UK and Canada).
  7. Receive Visa Grant — IRCC (Australian Home Affairs) issues the Subclass 500 grant by email — there is no physical visa sticker. Print your visa grant notice to show to airlines and border officials. Processing: typically 4-6 weeks for straightforward applications.
  8. Arrive in Australia & Get TFN — On arrival in Australia, apply for a Tax File Number (TFN) via the Australian Tax Office (ATO) website — free, processed in 1-2 weeks. You need your TFN to work legally and pay the correct tax rate. Open a bank account within your first week.
