I deem it as an opportunity and privilege to let me say something about myself by way of introduction. I am ****, an undergraduate in Mechanical Engineering from ****, ****, ****, India and presently working as an Associate Manager in Steel Melting Shop of Jindal Stainless Limited, Hissar, Haryana, India. The sweeping changes in the Global Industrialization and Design Engineering have made the role of mechanical engineer a really indispensable one. It has been my deepest desire to be a part of this rapidly burgeoning community.

I have always believed in the above adage, and realized early in my life that industriousness and hard work are the only investments that never fail. If I were to mention one quality in me that sets me apart, it is my never-say-die spirit which has goaded me on and on.
My years in school, apart from providing a strong foundation in Math and Basic Sciences, also enabled me to develop my overall personality. I have participated in various annual training camps of NCC (National Cadet Corps) arranged by our school. I was also appointed as monitor of the class. Being an avid student in school days, I actively participated in science workshops. It gave me deep appreciation for science and my quest for more led me to choose Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry as my majors at 10 + 2 level. I was placed in the top 0.2% of nearly 200,000 enthusiastic students in the entrance examination for Engineering. Securing such a very good rank in the engineering Entrance Exam to get into Motial Nehru National Institute of Technology (MNNIT), College of Engineering, one of the most prestigious institutions in INDIA, was the first step towards my goal. Educational enrichment occurs in environments that include a variety of ethnic and cultural backgrounds, the College that includes students from various parts of the country i.e. a college like MNNIT meets such standards.
A fascination for science and keen interest in the ever growing world of technology motivated me to take up Engineering and I chose to major in Mechanical Engineering for my under graduation with an intense urge to delve deeper in to the challenging field. The varied mechanical engineering courses have implanted a lot of enthusiasm in me. Attending of various mechanical workshops held in our college during National level Technical Festivals has helped me in understanding the practical aspects of mechanical courses. Of all the courses, Computer aided designing (CAD) has provoked a special interest in me. I have learnt CAD softwares like AutoCAD, ANSYS and CATIA. These Softwares paved way for the improvement in learning process of CAD. I have been an avid participant at many co-curricular activities. In CADWalk event of AVISHKAR2004-a national level technical festival held in our college, I have achieved a third prize. During AVISHKAR2005, I was the coordinator for the CADWalk. I even took classes for my juniors regarding AutoCAD software.
I also have the sufficient software knowledge in C language, in which I wrote various mechanical designing programs (Of Gears).
1) In summer vacations of third year, I have done a project of “Analysis of NOVA-B concern through statistical process control and modification of layout of champion load carrier body shop to reduce operator fatigue using ansys and Catia” in an renowned automobile company ‘Mahindra and Mahindra Limited’, Andhra Pradesh, India.
2) During the final year of my engineering course, a project of “Reduction of electricity consumption by using waste heat from diesel generators for vapour absorption systems and desiccant cooling system. Comparing these systems with present vapour compression system of CAD Lab. Project involves selection of Heat exchanger, calculation of air state and rate, selection of Vapour absorption cycle, selection of desiccant and desiccant cooling system and economic comparison of these systems (Running costs)” was done.
I was placed in Jindal Stainless Limited, the largest stainless steel Producer of India, during our Final Year. Jindal has trained me in various aspects like technical (Theoretical and practical), organizational behavior etc. Of all the training sessions the most valuable one was the training on Six Sigma. Following the training sessions, I did a Six Sigma project on “Reduction of roll grinding time in Roll shop” of Steckel Mill of Hot Rolling Division at Jindal Stainless Limited. After the project work, I was placed in steel melting shop. The analysis of various problems due to break downs caused by failure in gear systems, Couplings, EOT cranes etc in steel melting shop has added a valuable practical knowledge to the theoretical knowledge of undergraduate courses. My urge to expand my mental horizons in field of CAD has got a strong foundation in this industrial work.
The nature of undergraduate study does not offer enough scope for individual expression while rapidly advancing technology necessitates mastery of particular areas. I look at M.S program as essential tools towards excelling in my field of interest and platform. In my graduate program my goal is to expand my mental horizons, enhance my problem detection, analysis and solution skills and gain a comprehensive knowledge in my field. I am extremely interested in the field of CAD and have done extensive work in it. My project works and co-curricular activities are a testimony to it.
I have inferred from the information garnered that the graduate program in the ‘Computer Aided Engineering’ at your esteemed university has excellent facilities for research and an eminent faculty. Moreover the research work in the department is an exact match to my field of interests. Also my interaction with highly motivated and intellectual peers will keep me focused and make my study a pleasurable experience. I would also benefit from their cultural diversity and professional expertise.
Newton had said, “Science is like a vast beach spread in front of me and my knowledge is just a small pebble in that beach”. To be a more significant part of this vast beach, I consider it important to obtain my Master’s from a University of repute such as yours. For, I believe, the means is as important as the end.
The knowledge acquired in schools and colleges, I believe is not an education, but the means to it. It is this belief that makes me ‘a student to the end of my days’: the obvious direction being curiosity to wards exploration.
One of the memories of my childhood I deeply cherish is that of my first day in school. I distinctly remember my eyes watering as my parents bade me good-bye leaving me in an alien environment. We were made to draw pictures of familiar objects, my teacher recited rhymes in a soothing voice and by the end of the day I began to love school. I was fortunate to have begun with a good early education and as I grew, my interests and ability were inclined towards the physical nature of the universe. Science unraveled many a mystery for me math challenged me and gave me joy. Learning itself became key to my life.
My respect for education and inclination towards applied science drove me to opt for math, physics and chemistry in my higher secondary education. After completing my high school, I felt that Engineering would be the area, which would give me the opportunity to learn and explore how the fundamentals of science are applied to create technology for practical and real purposes. Moreover, my innate strengths have always been creative abilities and the power of imagination; which made me take up a discipline that would allow me to channel them in the best possible way. Thus, Mechanical engineering was a direct consequence of my convictions. Subjects like Manufacturing Process, CAD/CAM, Metal cutting & Machine Tool Engineering, Machine Design, Industrial Management, Kinematics & Dynamics of Machines, Automotive Engineering, Applied Thermodynamics, Control Systems Engineering etc., revealed to me limitless horizons in the field of Mechanical Engineering. My undergraduate study was a richly rewarding experience, during which I have participated various Industrial training programs.
The pursuit for knowledge has been the supreme goal in my life. We are in an era of global and technological changes where boundaries are fast disappearing and the greatest challenge tomorrow holds for us is to manage continuity of change. To satiate my curiosity and to fulfill my ambitions I have decided to pursue a masters program in Mechanical Engineering. I would like to get involved in research work in this area. Although there is a vast scope for research in this area, the scope for research in India is limited. The need for exposure to a wider environment has prompted me to seek an opportunity to study in the United States. The ever-increasing part played by computers in every discipline of Engineering and their synergetic role in manufacturing procedures called ‘Computer Integrated Manufacturing’ or CIM has encouraged me to learn various design application software packages like Auto Cad 2002& Pro-E.
To tell you more about my interest, the final year project, Design of Horizontal Machining center Spindle Line Elements which aims at incorporating few features of standard Design models, was an opportunity to gain knowledge of design applications in Mechanical Engg. The 4 years degree undergraduate course has not only provided me strong fundamentals, but also has encouraged me to learn more and goaded me to continue research related activities. My immediate career objective is a master’s degree in Engineering followed by a PhD and research oriented career in industry or academia. The choice of a good university with a faculty dedicated to teaching and research and an atmosphere conducive to learning, thus becomes extremely necessary.
After going through your website I found that by taking graduate studies at your University, I would be able to venture out into various subject domains and also develop a strong sense of independence coupled with responsibility and self-reliance, characteristic of the American culture. I always believed that curiosity has been the cornerstone of man’s evolution. I had this curiosity and thirst for knowledge in me. Right from my childhood, I was interested in Automobiles. I liked tinkering with objects. I always enjoyed analyzing and understanding the working of Automobiles, starting from experimenting on my toys to fixing my bike. I found ‘Mechanical Engineering’, the only way I can satisfy my quest for knowledge and contribute.
Admission to Undergraduate courses in Engineering is through a screening test taken by more than 100,000 students. This test requires a strong academic background at pre-university level, with good analytical and quantitative skills. My performance in this screening test provided me with the privilege of choice and I chose Mechanical Engineering as my undergraduate major at ****, affiliated to ****, which is considered the best in Technical education in the state and one of the well renowned universities in India. The days of my undergraduate study helped me get a firm grasp over the principles underlying Mechanical Engineering. I have studied numerous courses stretched across several related fields as dictated by the structure of my course work along with intensive practice in the respective laboratories. The pleasure of learning was augmented by the fact that I received continuous support and special encouragement from my professors for my interest in learning. I also presented a national level technical paper on “Forced Induction by Superchargers and Turbo chargers” which was well appreciated by one and all and opened wider horizons for me. I also did summer internship at Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) and worked up a technical report on “GAS TURBINE ENGINEERING”.
Mere technical knowledge does not mean everything in life. There are many more facets to life. Believing this, I have always tried to be in the forefront of extra-curricular activities right form childhood. I play basketball, football and Cricket. I captained my school team in several inter-district school matches. It was from these games that I learnt the importance of team play. I joined the ISTE (Indian Society for Technical Education) student chapter of our college. I was also the secretary of COMET (Chronicles Of Mechanical Engineering Team), the Mechanical Association of my college and organized many state-level technical and cultural festivals and Industrial Technical Tours.
Though my undergraduate study has given me a good exposure to the breadth of the concepts of Mechanical Engineering, I have never had the opportunity to fathom its depths. I feel that graduate study is essential to give me the preparation necessary for a planned career in my chosen field. I found that I was more interested in applying my knowledge practically and wanted to choose a field, which gave me this privilege. I did a detailed enquiry on all the different branches of Mechanical Engineering and came to a conclusion that “Automotive Engineering” is the branch that would suit my quest the best.
My intentions and ideas keep evolving every day and right now I stand at dreaming ten years beyond, where I see myself working on my own innovative project. I would want to start the realization of this dream by gaining deeper knowledge into my field of interest: ‘Mechanical Engineering’. A Masters in this field, followed by a doctorial would be my first steps.
I strongly believe in constantly evolving nature of technology and would like to be a part of the evolution. I think research is one best way we can constantly better our lives. But at the end, my hunger far from being satiated has only grown. I had a strong penchant for learning and creativity and this ensured my consistent excellence in academics as well as extra curricular activities. I opted the same in my 10+2 with a distinction and I was placed in the top 5% of 1, 28,000 students who took the Engineering entrance exam with me. During my under graduate course study, I was exposed to a plethora of diverse subjects in Mathematics, Pure Sciences, Engineering and Computers besides the intensive lab works in related subjects. During my freshman a series of course in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry reintroduced me into these subjects, but now with an Engineering bent courses like Engineering Mechanics, strength of materials, fluid mechanics and thermodynamics laid in me the strong fundamentals and problem solving techniques. I have been working as a Assistant Engineer in Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, responsible for helping design projects, providing thorough technical information and best solution to solve problems, sponsoring colloquiums and product displays, after-sales training, startup and troubleshooting work etc. Our main products are Avionic Parts used in Air Crafts (like Sukoi-30 and other fighter planes) through CNC machine in factory. I had my Cad-Cam even at my work place with solid Works 2006 as Cad package, and Cam Works 2007 as Cam on Mitui seiki HR5A five axis machine.
What I have learned is far from enough. Without advanced knowledge, I can hardly move forward.
